Travelling the UK on a budget.

We love a road trip and post pandemic we’ve made the most of what the UK has to offer.

We like to take weekend trips away to see what we can and explore as many places as possible with the boys. I am always asked how we manage to go to so many different places.

We tend to travel on weekends or use annual leave days to top and tail a weekend to get the most out of our time.

We also keep an eye out for offers and off peak prices and last minute deals.

Saving £££ is a big factor for so many right now so I thought we would share our top 5 ways we save money when we travel.

  1. Plan and budget ahead

When we first pick a destination we want to visit we compare prices throughout the season to see when is the most cost effective time to travel. We take in to consideration a variety of factors such as accommodation, travel, food and activities we plan to do in the area. Having a budget to work to prevents over spending and also gives a great snapshot of what you will spend and if there are areas you can compromise on.

  2. Explore free or lost cost things to do in the area.

We tend to pick accommodation that is within walking distance to local parks, trails and beaches. It’s also worth looking at indoor spaces such as free local museums just in case the weather is bad.

Keep an eye out for local festivals or free local events by searching the area in Facebook events or online.

  3. Prepare and cook your own food.

Save money by preparing food and heading to a local store for snacks and drinks to travel with. We like to stop off at an Aldi or Lidl and buy multipacks of crisps and juice. If you can, look for accommodation with cooking facilities or a kitchen, extra bonus if you can BBQ nearby!

  4. Use public transport to get around and explore.

Most local areas will have bus and train offers for families or multiple days. You’ll also save on parking!

  5. Keep an eye out for offers.

Sign up to newsletters and follow leisure and entertainment facilities on social media where they usually release discounts! The free adult passes on cereal packets are always worth collecting but note you must book in advance!
