Compact camper - The VW Caddy California

For many years school holidays and half terms were spent in my grandads caravan, in a field somewhere sleeping in an awning and waking up to the smell of fresh grass and the occasional Daddy long legs crawling on the ceiling.

My memory is not that great but those moments hood memories that will last a lifetime for me. Taking my own children out to experience the same feeling of freedom and adventure is something I have dreamed of for a long time, before we even fell pregnant and we’re blessed with our two boys.

We got our first camping experience with the Caddy California this bank holiday. The compact camper has a fold out bed that is roomy enough for two adults (1,980mm x 1,070mm) and comfortably fit myself and the two boys in with a bit of DIY padding around the

outside for safety.

The bed is easy to fold out and pack back away and I managed to do both alone.

This process begins with pushing the front two seats forward and reclining forward and by folding the three down in the back. Once the bed is pulled out there is adequate storage in the footwell for bags and the two car seats I travelled with were simply I clipped from the back

seats and placed into front seats with little Tetris styled manoeuvres.

For privacy there are blinds and the Caddy is kitted out with adjustable lighting, perfect for reading and winding down.

At the back of the Caddy is a mini kitchen complete with gas hob and storage space for cutlery in a nest and compact drawer.

There is also a surprising amount of space in the back considering there is a bed, hob, 2 fold up chairs and table as well as storage drawers and seats to fit 5 people!

I really did not want to give this camper back and I’m already looking forward to the next time we get to take it out. There is an awning attachment that brings even greater space and we will definitely be playing around with that next time we get the keys.

The Caddy California, alongside other great Volkswagen vehicles are available on daily, weekly or monthly hire from Breeze Volkswagen Rent A Car (click below to be taken straight to the site) or email vanrental@breeze.co.uk for all enquiries.
